My Son Sanctuary, a UNESCO World Heritage Site recognized in 1999, is a great sample of the ancient Champa civilization located in Quang Nam Province, about 55km from Hoi An. Out of the 225 Cham vestiges in Vietnam, this is one of the most prominent and significant centers of major SE Asian Hindu shrines. The impressive Hindu-themed ruins feature many beautiful stone sculptures, temples and towers in tropical jungle surroundings.
My Son was also a political center and a royal burial ground and the complex consists of with 71 catalogued monuments and 32 epitaphs – the content of which is still being studied- devoted to Hindu gods and goddesses and the most noticeable one, Shiva, was considered the protector of the Champa’s Kings.
